I’ve been thinking a lot about our 2010 family trip to Germany. This is partially due to the fact that I had a couple of our favorite pictures from that trip framed for our remodeled bathroom, and partially due to the fact that, well, fantasizing about another Germany trip is a part of my regular routine. I would love to go back there NOW. If I could, I would make my way around the entire country, mostly by train.
Maybe I’d fly from Chicago to Hamburg first and see what’s going on up there in the north, because I’ve never been to that part of Germany. From Hamburg I’d probably make my way east and slightly south to Berlin and check out the art scene, and then head due south to Dresden. I visited Dresden in 2006 and absolutely loved it. It was a part of the old East Germany and because of that history I found very few people who spoke English, which I found to be very good news because it gave me a chance to practice my language skills. Dresden also happens to be the home of the World’s Most Beautiful Dairy (and it really is). There were signs posted explicitly forbidding photos (because they were busy enough without having to deal with pesky tourists armed with cameras), but I totally broke that rule by stealthily taking one picture. (I’m such a rebel.) I would visit the Frauenkirche in Dresden again for sure, and eat a meal at the same cafe right next door as I did last time.
After Dresden I’d head to Bavaria, starting in Munich where I’d plan an extended visit with Kat and her hubby, just tooling around the city and eating at neighborhood restaurants and wandering through beautiful fields of sunflowers before getting on my way to the Alps.
I’d spend a couple of days in the mountains enjoying the scenery and visiting some castles, and then rent a car to drive north on the Romantic Road, stopping at the little towns along the way until I reach charming, walled-in Rothenburg o.d. Tauber, where I’d spend a long weekend. (Favorite!)
After Rothenburg I’d probably be missing city life so I’d head due northwest to Frankfurt, and sightsee for a couple of days there before getting on the plane to come home.
Since I don’t have the money OR the time to make this Germany trip as I have planned it in my head, I guess I’m just going to have to keep dreaming, for now.

Sounds like a perfect trip! I lived in Bremen for two years and saw a lot of Germany but there is so much more to see. I hope to return and do such a trip some day!
Sounds like a fantastic trip. I have several such trips planned in my head. Gotta start somewhere, right?
I just love to travel. Anywhere. I hope to cross the Atlantic someday, but if it never happens, I know that there is plenty to see and enjoy on this continent… My 17 year old self would be mortified to know I’ve come to this place in my life. 😉
